About the Role: Responsibilities, Skills, and Requirements

Introduction

Ever walked past a building and wondered who turned those ambitious sketches into something a contractor could actually build? That’s where you come in. We’re an established engineering consultancy in Abu Dhabi, and we’re on the hunt for a skilled Architectural Draftsman who doesn’t just push lines around in AutoCAD but genuinely understands the art of translating design intent into precise, buildable drawings. This isn't just another drafting chair—it's a chance to work on meaningful projects in a city that’s literally redefining modern architecture, with the stability of a firm that’s been around the block.

About the Company

We’re not a massive, faceless corporation. Think of us as a tight-knit team of engineers, designers, and project managers who genuinely enjoy the collaborative chaos of a busy design studio. We’ve built our reputation on delivering technically sound solutions across residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments throughout the UAE. While we take the work seriously, we don’t take ourselves too seriously—you’ll often find the coffee machine surrounded by heated debates about the best rendering software or the latest facade trend. At our core, we value initiative and precision, and we’re at that sweet spot where you can still make a real impact without getting lost in a sea of red tape.

What You’ll Be Doing (Responsibilities)

  • Taking conceptual designs and rough sketches and turning them into detailed, construction-ready architectural drawings that contractors actually look forward to receiving.
  • Collaborating closely with our architects and engineers to ensure your drafts align perfectly with structural and MEP requirements—because nobody likes surprises on site.
  • Developing 3D models and photorealistic renderings that help clients visualize the end product before a single shovel hits the ground.
  • Revising drawings efficiently based on feedback from senior team members, local authorities, or clients—yes, sometimes that means a quick turnaround on a Friday afternoon.
  • Maintaining organized project files and drawing registers, ensuring version control is always on point.
  • Staying up to date with local building codes and authority submission requirements, so your drawings aren’t just beautiful but also compliant.

What You’ll Bring (Qualifications)

Must-Haves:

  • Proven experience as an architectural draftsman, ideally within a consultancy or engineering firm in the Gulf region.
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD —this is your bread and butter, and we expect you to be fast and accurate.
  • Solid working knowledge of 3ds Max, SketchUp, Revit, or Lumion for modeling and rendering tasks.
  • A keen eye for detail and spatial awareness—you notice when a dimension is off by 50mm before anyone else does.
  • The ability to work independently when needed but also thrive in a team environment where collaboration is key.

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Familiarity with Abu Dhabi municipality submission processes.
  • Experience working on large-scale or high-rise developments.
  • A diploma or degree in architecture, civil engineering, or a related field.

Not sure you tick every box? We’d still love to hear from you. If you’ve got the core skills and the hunger to grow, we’re willing to invest in the right person.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

  • Competitive, tax-free salary that reflects your experience and the value you bring to the table.
  • A real work-life balance—we respect your weekends and try to keep the overtime to a minimum, though deadlines do happen.
  • Hybrid flexibility on certain days, giving you the option to work from home when the task allows.
  • Hands-on project exposure that goes beyond just drafting—you’ll be involved in coordination meetings and site visits, so you see your work come to life.
  • A supportive culture where senior team members genuinely mentor juniors, and your ideas for improving workflows are always welcomed.
  • Annual leave, medical insurance, and visa sponsorship handled smoothly, so you can focus on the job, not the paperwork.

At the end of the day, we want you to feel like this is your firm too—a place where your drawings shape the skyline and your skills are sharpened every single week. If that sounds like the kind of environment you’ve been looking for, we’d love to see your portfolio and chat about what you can bring to our Abu Dhabi studio.

Common Interview Questions and Tips

To help you prepare and feel confident, here are some questions you might encounter during the interview process for this role.

  • Walk me through how you take a rough conceptual sketch and turn it into a set of construction-ready drawings. Where do you start, and what’s your process for ensuring nothing gets lost in translation?
  • Can you share a time when a dimension error or a drafting mistake slipped through and made it to the site? How did you catch it, and what did you change about your workflow afterward?
  • We use AutoCAD daily, but we also lean on tools like Revit, SketchUp, and Lumion for modeling and rendering. Which of these are you most comfortable with, and how do you decide when to switch between them for a given task?
  • Tell me about a project where you had to coordinate your architectural drawings with structural or MEP requirements. How did you handle the clashes or conflicts that came up?
  • Have you dealt with Abu Dhabi municipality submissions or local authority requirements before? If so, walk me through a specific instance where compliance shaped how you drafted something.
  • Imagine a senior architect hands you a mark-up on a Friday afternoon and asks for revisions before the weekend. How do you prioritize that against your other ongoing work, and what does your turnaround process look like?
  • Describe a time when you had to revise a set of drawings multiple times based on feedback from different people—maybe a client, an engineer, and a project manager. How did you keep track of all the changes without losing your sanity?
  • We’re a tight-knit studio where collaboration is key. Can you give me an example of a situation where you had to push back on a request or offer an alternative solution to an architect or engineer? How did you approach that conversation?
  • Walk me through your file management habits. How do you keep your drawing registers and version control organized, especially when multiple people are working on the same project?
  • What’s the most complex or large-scale project you’ve drafted for, and what made it challenging from a drafting perspective? How did you stay on

Market-Based Salary Overview and Analysis

Based on what similar drafting roles at engineering consultancies in Abu Dhabi typically pay, you should expect a salary between AED 7,000 and AED 12,000 per month, depending on your years of experience and proficiency with tools like Revit and Lumion. If you bring solid Gulf experience and can hit the ground running on authority submissions, aiming for the higher end of that range is realistic. Don't sell yourself short—this role is asking for a mix of technical drawing and 3D visualization, which is a specialized combo that commands good market value.
