About the Role: Responsibilities, Skills, and Requirements
Ever wondered what it takes to carve out the pathways that keep a building alive — the electrical lines and plumbing that run behind every wall? As a Grooving Machine Operator, you're the one who makes that happen, cutting precise channels that electricians and plumbers depend on to bring a structure to life. We're looking for experienced operators in Abu Dhabi who know their way around a disc cutter and an angle grinder, and who take pride in clean, accurate work. This isn't just a job — it's a skilled trade that keeps every project on schedule and up to standard.
About the Company
We're a hands-on contracting outfit working on residential and commercial builds across Abu Dhabi, and we've built our reputation on doing things right the first time. The crew here is tight-knit — most of our operators have been with us for years, and there's a reason for that. We look out for our people, keep the sites organised, and make sure everyone gets home safe. If you've worked on sites where chaos is the norm, you'll notice the difference here straight away.
What You'll Be Doing
- Set up and operate disc cutting machines and angle grinders to cut wall channels for electrical and plumbing installations
- Read and follow site drawings and measurements to make sure every groove is exactly where it needs to be
- Keep your cuts clean, straight, and to the right depth — sloppy channels cause headaches for everyone downstream
- Maintain your tools and equipment so they're ready to go when the shift starts
- Follow all site safety procedures, including PPE and dust control measures
- Coordinate with electricians, plumbers, and site supervisors to keep the work flowing smoothly
What You'll Bring
Must-Haves:
- Proven experience operating wall grooving and cutting equipment on construction sites
- Comfort working with disc cutters and angle grinders, with a solid grasp of safe handling
- Ability to read site drawings and take accurate measurements
- A track record of delivering quality work — clean lines, correct depths, no shortcuts
- Physical fitness and the stamina to work on active construction sites in Abu Dhabi's climate
Nice-to-Haves:
- Familiarity with UAE construction standards and site protocols
- A valid UAE driving licence or your own transport to reach different sites
- Experience working across both residential and commercial projects
Not sure you tick every box? We'd still love to hear from you — experience and attitude matter more to us than a perfect checklist.
Why You'll Love Working Here
- Contract or freelance flexibility — we'll work with the arrangement that suits you best
- Consistent project pipeline across Abu Dhabi, so you're not sitting idle between jobs
- Fair pay for skilled work — we know good operators are worth it, and we pay accordingly
- A safety-first culture where your wellbeing isn't an afterthought
- A team that respects the trade — no micromanaging, just clear expectations and support when you need it
We're not promising flashy perks or a corner office — but if you're a skilled operator who wants steady work, fair treatment, and a crew that values what you bring to the site, this is a good place to be.
Common Interview Questions and Tips
To help you prepare and feel confident, here are some questions you might encounter during the interview process for this role.
- Walk me through how you set up and mark a wall before making a channel cut — from reading the drawing to the first pass with the disc cutter.
- How do you control depth when grooving, and what signs tell you mid-cut that you're drifting too deep or off line?
- What's your routine for checking and maintaining a disc cutter and angle grinder between shifts, and how do you decide when a blade needs replacing?
- Tell me about a time a channel didn't come out as planned — wrong line, wrong depth, hit something unexpected. What happened and how did you handle it?
- Electricians and plumbers often want their channels in slightly different spots than the drawing shows. How do you handle those requests on site?
- What dust control and PPE practices do you follow when cutting, and have you ever had to push back on a site that wasn't meeting those standards?
- Describe a project where your cuts had to line up with work done by another trade. How did you coordinate to avoid rework?
- Abu Dhabi summers are brutal. How do you manage your pace and stamina through a full shift in the heat without cutting corners on quality?
- Tell me about a time a supervisor asked you to rush a job in a way that would have compromised the work. What did you say or do?
- What kind of site environment brings out your best work, and what have past crews done that made you want to stay with them?
- How do you like to receive instructions and feedback on site — and how do you handle it when a young engineer's drawing doesn't match what's actually in front of you?
- Have you worked across both residential and commercial builds? What's different about grooving work on each, in your experience?
